[M.C.] London Gazette 27 July 1916, a handwritten citation with his service papers states:

‘Military Cross was awarded for conspicuous and consistent gallantry and good work throughout the campaign, notably on one occasion, when, when after a heavy hostile attack, he led out a party of his company, followed up the retreating enemy, and inflicted severe loss on him.’

James Daly was born at Liverpool and enlisted there with the number 5033, on 30 January 1895 seeing two years of home service before being posted to India on 30 November 1897. Promoted Sergeant there on 15 December 1904 he returned to Britain on 8 November 1907. Appointed Company Quartermaster-Sergeant on 1 October 1913, it was with this rank that he entered the Great War in France on 8 September 1914.

Appointed acting Regimental Sergeant-Major on 24 October 1915 reverting to Company Quartermaster-Sergeant on 10 January 1917. Advanced Regimental Quartermaster-Sergeant on 2 April 1917 he was posted to the 10th Battalion on 13 September of that year and appointed Sergeant-Major on 1 October. Daly was discharged on 22 February 1919 after 22 years of service.
