The attributed O.B.E., M.C., group of eight worn by Colonel H. W. R. Chandler, Yorkshire and Lancaster Regiment, later Director of Supplies on the Gold Coast

[O.B.E.] London Gazette 1 January 1944.

[M.C.] London Gazette 14 November 1916, the original citation states:

‘For conspicuous gallantry in action. Although wounded, he led his men and beat off repeated enemy attacks, displaying great courage and initiative throughout.’

Herbert William Ralph Chandler was born at Stroud, Gloucestershire in 1894, the son of Richard and Elizabeth Chandler of Woodmancote, Dursley. Joining the Gloucestershire Regiment as a Sergeant with the number 1643, he was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant with the Yorkshire and Lancashire Regimen on 14 August 1915, entering the war the same day. Promoted Acting Captain on 12 January 1917 he relinquished this rank on 15 June 1917 retaining the permanent rank of Lieutenant.

With the end of the war Chandler emigrated to the Gold Coast, serving with the Territorial Army while there. Advanced to a Colonel prior to the outbreak of the Second World War, Chandler was appointed Director of Supplies on the Gold Coast. He was still in Africa after the war when he died on 30 March 1947; sold together with copied research comprising census data, M.I.C. transcription and London Gazette extracts as well as a corresponding riband bar.
