An unusual Bishop's personal Wax Seal used by William Frederick Surtees, brass seal with a Coat of Arms to centre and engraved: The Seal of William Frederick Surtees M.A. Archdeacon of Exeter A.D. 1952, in fitted presentation case, good very fine

William Frederick Surtees was born in October 1871 and, after education at Bedford School and King's College Cambridge, was Ordained in 1900. After an initial curacy in North Yorkshire he appears to have spent the remainder of his calling in south-west England, being successively rector of Sampford Courtenay; vicar of St. Simon's, Plymouth; Archdeacon of Exeter; and finally Suffragan Bishop of Crediton for no less than 24 years. The Right Reverend W.F. Surtees died in March 1956.

Sold together with a copy of his Memorial Service notification in 'The Times', 5 April 1956; a copy of 'The Hill of the Lord: Epistles and Gospels' (1931), and 'The Form of Ordaining or Consecrating a Bishop', with gold-embossed initials 'W.F.S.' to cover; this containing a most charming and intricate illuminated text on vellum, clearly used by Surtees for his Ordination.
