'At the invitation of Sir Frederick Treves, acting on the suggestion of Sir Arthur Stanley, of the Red Cross, Princess Mary presented badges to those whose work for the hospital had been of exceptional value. The badges were of a simple and beautiful design, showing the figure of Mercy tending the helpless, with a suggestion of a Red Cross in the background'

Star and Garter Hospital Badge, enamelled (Nurse Winifred McMaster 6.4.16-31.1.17 1.9.17-21.9.18), in its fitted case of issue, good very fine

Winifred McMaster lived at 52 Hewitt Road, Hamstead and served with the Voluntary Aid Detachment from 9 September 1915. She worked first at the Brooklands Hospital, Waybridge before joining the Star and Garter (Auxiliary) Hospital on 6 April 1916. She remained her until 31 January 1917 before re-joining on 1 September 1917 and serving until after the war on 10 April 1919; sold together with copied service papers, photographs and an extract from War Work at Home.
