Reid Henderson was born in 1887 at Old Kilpatrick, Dunbartonshire and is recorded as having served as a Corporal in the Field Battery of the Hong Kong Volunteer Corps in their 1901-02 Report. He is noted on the Colonial List as an Engineer in Hong Kong in 1922. He notably was Manager of Holt's Wharf at Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon, Hong Kong. The Wharf was built in 1910 and was jointly owned by British Swire Group and Blue Funnel Line, before being sold in 1971. Today the site is known as the Victoria Dockside.

During the Second World War, Henderson was taken captive as a civilian at Hong Kong and was held in Room 308 at the Nam Ping Hotel, before being transferred to Stanley Internment Camp.
