Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., G.V.R. (186544 W. J. Richards, P.O. 1CL, H.M.S. Leander.), very fine

William John Richards was born at Babbicombe, Devon on 18 December 1878 and was a cab driver by trade upon his joining the Royal Navy on 18 December 1896. During the Great War he served upon Avon and Albacore and was 'mentioned' by War's end (London Gazette 8 March 1918, refers). Richards was present in the period Avon was deployed to the Irish Sea Hunting Flotilla, providing anti-submarine and counter-smuggling patrols following the Easter Uprising of 1916 in Dublin.
