Alfred Purdy was born at Birkenhead, Cheshire and attested at Birmingham on 8 February 1899. Posted to India he was to serve there for over nine years from 13 February 1902, before heading for South Africa for another three years. He returned to Britain on 18 January 1913 and was appointed Squadron Sergeant Major just four days later.

On the outbreak of the Great War he entered the war in France on 23 August 1914 and was appointed Warrant Officer Class II on 29 Janaury 1915. He was to serve in France for the duration of the war and was discharged on 4 March 1920.
