A Great War D.C.M. awarded to Sergeant J. Ferguson, Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, who was latterly killed at the Battle of Arras on 9 April 1917

Distinguished Conduct Medal, G.V.R. (S-7515 Cpl. J. Ferguson. 11/A. & S. Hdrs.), good very fine

D.C.M. London Gazette 14 December 1916:

'He twice led a party of bombers with great courage and determination, finally clearing the enemy from their position. He set a splendid example of coolness and initiative throughout.'

James Ferguson was born at Dalziel, Lanarkshire in 1887 and served in France during the Great War from 2 October 1915. He won his D.C.M. with the 11th Battalion during the summer of 1916, most likely in their capture of Martinpuich during the actions around Flers-Courcelette from 15-22 September. The unit had to bomb 'Tangle South' and came across heavy resistance on the sunken road, likely the action in which his award was earned. Ferguson would be killed in action during the Battle of Arras and is commemorated upon the Arras Memorial. His Medals were sent to Miss Ferguson at Camp Street, Motherwell in August 1920, whilst one of his brothers lived at East Innisfail, Queensland.
