(x) A 'Korea 1953' casualty’s group of three awarded to Private H. Ard, 3rd Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment who died of wounds on 14 May 1953 having been caught in a shell blast

Henry Ard was born at Niagara Falls, Ontario on 16 September 1933 and worked as a Machinery Spray Painter prior to attesting on 23 January 1952. Completing his Training on 13 June 1952 and was posted to the 3rd Battalion in Korea the next year on 27 March 1953. The Battalion was posted to Hill 187, soon to be the site of a bitter battle between the unit and a major Chinese Offensive.

Ard was not killed during the Battle of 187 however but several days before on 29 April 1953 when he was caught in a shell blast which caused compound fractures in both legs. Taken to the 60th Infantry Field Ambulance and from there to the 43rd Mobile Army Surgical Hospital. His injuries were far too severe for field treatment however and Ard was evacuated to the British and Commonwealth Hospital at Kure, Japan.

He died here on 14 May 1953 having had one leg amputated, he is buried at the British Cemetery, Yokohama, Japan on 16 May; sold together with copied service papers and a name plaque as well as an original photograph of the recipient.
