Four: Private W. G. Lilley, 6th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment, who was taken Prisoner-of-War on 4 March 1943

Walter G. Lilley was born at Stamford on 26 June 1921, the son of William and Sarah Lilley. He Joined the Lincolnshire Regiment and saw service with the 6th Battalion during the Second World War. In Britain during 1942 Lilley took the opportunity to marry Beatrice Davis at Stamford before joining his Battalion in North Africa.

The 6th Battalion formed part of 46th Infantry Division, being posted to North Africa in January 1943. They saw their first action in Tunisia the next month. The next month Lilley went missing during an engagement at Sedjenane in which 98 men of the Battalion were taken. He was confirmed as a Prisoner of War not long afterwards, being taken to Stalag XI-A at Altengrabow.

Lilley was repatriated after the end of the war and returned to Britain. He lived in Stamford until his death on 9 August 1990; sold together with copied census data, prisoner of war record transcriptions and an extract from The History of the Royal Lincolnshire Regiment.
