'In January 1945 the Red Army was closing in, and the Germans decided to evacuate all but the sick, the English doctors, padres and nursing orderlies. More than 8,000 men were assembled, and the huge column marched off westwards. Some who could not keep up were shot, some died of hypothermia, some of starvation, some of dysentery … '

Ellis Parnell was taken P.O.W. in France in 1940 and was incarcerated in Stalag XX-B at Marienburg, Danzig, Poland; his service number was 944542.

His father, also named Ellis, was awarded his I.S.M. for services as an Assistant Supervisor for the London Postal Region (London Gazette 12 April1946, refers), and he died in Morden, Surrey in February 1953.
