Four: Petty Officer L. F. Hall, Royal Navy, who was torpedoed whilst aboard the battleship Capetown in 1941 and later served with the Captain-class frigate Byard when she sank U-841 in 1943

Leslie Frederick Hall was born at Sandford, Crediton on 26 October 1909 and joined the Royal Navy as Boy Class II on 13 May 1925. Reaching maturity with H.M.S. Delhi on 26 October 1927, he served on a number of vessels through the inter-war period. On the outbreak of the Second World War, Hall was stationed with Capetown as a Leading Seaman.

He was still with her off Massawa on 21 April 1941 when the Italian M.T.B. MAS 213 torpedoed her, killing seven men. Hall left the warship the next month, joining the General Platt before going ashore on 2 January 1942. After training at the Torpedo School Defiance he joined the Captain-class frigate Byard on 21 July 1943. Hall was serving with her as a Petty Officer when she destroyed U-841, the first U-Boat 'kill' made by a Captain-class ship.

Hall was discharged as a Petty Officer on 22 November 1949; sold together with copied service papers.
