(x) A remarkably well-documented First World War pair to Sergeant S.O. Fawell, 66th (East Lancashire) Divisional Train, Army Service Corps, who was Mentioned in Dispatches and whose war time diary was deposited in the Bolton Museum

Sidney Ormrod Fawell, a native of Bolton, Lancashire worked as a grocer's assistant at John Haslam, Baker and Grocer, St George's Road, Bolton. Attesting for the Army Service Corps not long after the outbreak of war on 9 November 1914 he served in France throughout the war.

His diary which he kept during the war is held in the Bolton Museum, excerpts of which can be found in this online link:

It includes a number of interesting entries including an eyewitness account of an aerial duel, stating:

'23 April [1917]
Whilst making the issue we were treated to an air duel. German [plane] chased by 3 British planes. [The German pilot] attempted to get back to his own lines but was forced to descend and was taken prisoner.'

After the war Farwell resumed his occupation as a retail grocer and died in Bolton on 21 December 1942; sold together with an original MID certificate named to the recipient, corresponding dress miniatures, a cap badge and some 25 photos and paperwork.
