William Vittles was born at Shillingford, Devon and enlisted at Exeter with the 8th Battalion, Devonshire Regiment. This unit saw heavy action during the Somme Offensive and later on the Ancre. Vittles was killed in action during the sporadic fighting on the Ancre on 15 February 1917, he is buried at the Etaples Military Cemetery.
James Pennells was born at Shepherds Bush, London and enlisted at Stepney with the Royal Lancaster Regiment, later transferring to the Lincolnshire Regiment with the number 57552. He entered the war at some stage after 1916 and was killed in action on 26 April 1918 during the German Spring Offensive. Pennells is commemorated upon the Tyne Cot Memorial.
