Cyril Herington Hassall was born on 5 December 1888 and worked as a Bank Clerk at his home town of Torquay, Devon prior to enlisting with the Devonshire Regiment on 16 June 1915. Promoted Lance-Sergeant by 25 February 1916 he was posted to the Oxford Cadet Battalion on 17 April of that year.
Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on 4 September 1916 he joined the Leicestershire Regiment in France on 13 October 1916. Here he was posted to 'D' Company, 1st Battalion with his first major appointment in France being as Town Major of Noyelles on 6 January 1917.
Hassall re-joined his Battalion not long afterwards on 18 February 1917 and soon after was admitted, sick, to 14 General Hospital. Again re-joining the Battalion on 6 June 1917 he was posted as Town Major to Noyelles Les Vermelles. Approval was given soon afterwards for his appointment as Perminent Base Officer at the Town. Here Hassall remained until being transferred to the General list as Staff Lieutenant Class III on 15 January 1918. He retained this appointment for the rest of the war; sold together with copied service papers, M.I.C. and application for commission papers.
