John Alexander Marr was born in 1889, a native of Langside, Glasgow. Enlisting with the Highland Light Infantry on 25 January 1908 and was still serving with the Regiment on the outbreak of the Great War. Entering the war in France on 30 November 1914 and was advanced Sergeant during the conflict later transferring to the Machine Gun Corps. After the war Marr was posted to the 17th Indian Division, Machine Gun Corps for service in Kurdistan during the uprising there in 1919, prior to the general uprising in Iraq. Marr was discharged on 16 December 1919.
