William Stevens entered the war in France on 5 March 1915 with the Walsall Territorial unit, the 1st/5th Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment. They saw heavy fighting at Ypres, Hooge and Hohenzollern Redoubt before being posted briefly to Egypt. Returning to France for the Somme Offensive the unit saw fighting at Gommecourt, the Retreat to the Hindenburg Line and the Hundred Days. Stevens survived the fighting, having been promoted Temporary Sergeant and was demobilised on 10 March 1919; sold together with a copied M.I.C. and medal rolls.
