Alexander Sutherland was born at Leith on 10 February 1889 and was a trace boy by trade upon his joining the Royal Navy on 2 April 1905. He was given 42 days Half Pay for breaking out of his ship when aboard Flora in September 1907. By the outbreak of the Great War he was an Able Seaman and served aboard Gloucester, which saw him present for the persuit of the Goeben and Breslau and at the Battle of Jutland. She formed part of the 3rd Light Cruiser Squadron and fired a total of 37 shells and was not damaged during the Battle. Having earned his L.S. & G.C. Medal in April 1926, Sutherland went ashore in January 1927.
