Harry Taplin was born at Stoneham, Hampshire on 24 September 1877 and was a labourer upon his joining the Royal Navy in November 1893. During the Great War he served aboard Unity from 27 March 1914-30 June 1916. This saw Taplin share in the Scarborough Raid in the early morning of 16 December 1914, operating as one of four in the first division headed by Lynx. She was also present at the Battle of Jutland, with the 3rd Division of the 4th Destroyer Flotilla under the command of Lieutenant-Commander Arthur Macaulay Lecky.

Joining the Opportune on 1 July 1916, Taplin had earned his L.S. & G.C. Medal in January 1915 and was put ashore in December 1919.
