William Cragg was born at Preston, Derby in 1866 and enlisted on 20 October 1885 at Derby, listing previous experience with the Militia as he did so. Seeing fourteen years of Home Service he was later posted to South Africa on 17 March 1900. Serving here until 13 July 1902 he returned to Britain and was discharged on 12 August 1902.
