Miles Buck was born in 1874, the son of Stephen Buck of 83 Bree Street, Cape Town. Working as an Engineer when the Anglo-Boer War broke out he enlisted with Kitchener's Horse on 16 July 1900. Serving with this unit until 15 November 1901 Buck was then transferred to Marshall's Horse. The Queen's South Africa medal roll also suggests service with the D.E.O.V. Rifles and the 1st City Volunteers although this latter unit was one of those which formed Marshall's Horse and his inclusion with them may not reflect any service. Buck was to remain with Marshall's Horse until 31 May 1902.
