Arthur Walter Sayer was born at Saxmundham, Suffolk in 1867 before attesting with the 9th Lancers on 13 May 1891 at Ipswich. Appointed Lance-Corporal in June 1894 he was posted to South Africa on 26 August 1896 before transferring to India on 12 March 1898. Joining the Army Reserve on 4 March 1899 Sayer was recalled for service not long later on 11 November. Posted to South Africa on 2 December 1899 he remained there for several years finally leaving on 29 August 1902 returning to the Army Reserve on 26 April 1903 Sayer was discharged the next year.
