William Watson was born at Grimsby, Lincoln in 1876, working as a fish curer prior to enlisting at Lincoln on 30 July 1894 and posted to the Lincolnshire Regiment later that year. His first overseas service was as part of the Malta Garrison from 1 February 1895 and the unit was still here in 1897 when the British Army began to assemble forces for the reconquest of the Sudan.
The regiment served with distinction throughout the campaign seeing heavy hand-to-hand fighting at the Atbara. Later they were also in the thick of the action for the Battle of Omdurman which saw the British retake Khartoum and finally avenge the death of General Gordon. After the fighting Watson was posted to India where he was appointed a Pioneer on 16 July 1900. He returned to Britain on 22 December 1902 and saw home service until his discharge on 29 July 1906.
