William Airth was born at Forfar and enlisted at Hamilton on 7 December 1894. He served at Malta from 25 September 1895-20 November 1895, serving in the East Indies from 21 November 1895-4 February 1899. He then served in Ceylon between 5 February 1899-16 February 1900, returning home for service between 17 February 1900-6 October 1901. He is then sent to South Africa from 7 October 1901-31 October 1902 and served at the Depot with the Manchester Regiment in the Second Boer War. He finished his service at home from 1 November 1902, being discharged on 6 December 1906.
