General Service 1915-62, 1 clasp, Persian Gulf 1909-1914 (233401 A. Cotton, A.B. H.M.S. Sphinx.), lacquered, slight edge bruise, overall very fine

Alfred Cotton was born at Nottingham on 25 March 1889 and entered the Royal Navy on 18 February 1905 as Boy Class II. Completing his training at Ganges he reached his majority aboard H.M.S. Topaze being promoted Able Seaman with her on 25 November 1907. He saw a number of postings during his service including the battleship Albion, the cruiser Highflyer and the special service paddle-steamer Sphinx. It was aboard the latter that he earned the Persian Gulf clasp for anti-slavery and gun running patrols in the region which Cotton took part in between 6 April 1911-26 April 1913. He was finally discharged from Pembroke I as a result of heart disease; sold together with a copied medal roll.
