The India General Service Medal awarded to Colour-Sergeant R. W. Postlethwaite, Border Regiment, who died in India in March 1940

India General Service 1908-35, 1 clasp, North West Frontier 1930-31 (3594553 Pte. R. W. Postlethwaite, Bord. R.), edge bruise, very fine

Robert Wells Postlethwaite was born at Whitehaven, Cumberland in October 1906, the son of James and Barbara Postlethwaite; his parents later settled at Egremont in the same county.

Robert died of T.B. in India on 24 March 1940, aged 33 years, whilst employed as a Colour-Sergeant in the 2nd Battalion, Border Regiment. He left a widow, Mary Jane, of Workington, Cumberland, and is buried in Calcutta (Bhowanipore) Cemetery, Kolkata.

Mary Jane subsequently married Regimental Sergeant-Major Henry Young of the 9th Battalion, Border Regiment but he too died on active service, in Burma, in May 1944. Her gravestone at St. Peter's Church at Camerton, Allerdale in Cumbria, commemorates both of her late husbands.
