Fred Cooper was born at Brandon, Norfolk in 1887, a native of Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, where he lived with his wife Harriet. Joining the 1st/1st (Territorial) Battalion, Cambridgeshire Regiment at Wisbech, Cooper and his comrades entered the Great War in France on 14 February 1915. They saw heavy service throughout the year notably at St. Eloi and Fosse Wood before transferring to the Hamel Sector in August 1916. Cooper was killed on 29 August 1916 while here, one of two men who died on that date. The war diary mentions that the Battalion sent out several patrols throughout the day and a remarkable incident in which a British aeroplane was shot down- crashing into their lines.
