Alfred Shaw was born in 1879, the son of Andrew Shaw of Lepton, Huddersfield, Yorkshire. The younger Shaw had clearly emigrated to South Africa by the outbreak of the Anglo-Boer War as he attested in Cape Town on 14 August 1901, listing his occupation as Miner; sold together with transcribed attestation paper.
