Afghanistan 1878-80, 1 clasp, Ali Musjid (1586. Lce Corpl J. Macklin. 81st Foot.), edge wear, overall very fine

Joseph Macklin was born at Inneshannon, Cork in 1848 and attested for the 81st Regiment of Foot on 27 October 1868. Appointed Lance Corporal on 30 April 1878 he served in this rank during the Second Anglo-Afghan War. The 81st were part of General Sam Browne’s army at the Battle of Ali Musjid, where they formed part of General Appleyard’s Third Brigade. This unit crossed the River Kabul and stormed the trenches before the fortress itself, despite managing to take a bridgehead the Brigade was forced to retreat at the end of the first day of fighting. Fortunately the turning forces sent by Browne forced the Afghans to retreat the next day. Macklin returned to Britian on 6 October 1883 and was discharged on 20 March 1888.
