South Africa 1877-79, 1 clasp, 1879 (3057. Pte. B. Coveney. 2/4th. Foot), good very fine

Bartholomew Coveney is confirmed on the Roll with entitlement to this Medal and Clasp. Born at Kinsale, County Cork, in 1851 he attested for service with the British Army in 1870 at the age of 19 and giving his occupation as a farm labourer. Initially joining the 106th Regiment of Foot (Bombay Light Infantry) he was in India with them from 1870-74; transferring to the 28th Foot in November 1875, he accompanied the regiment to Malta, Hong Kong and the Straits Settlements over the following four years. In June 1879 he transferred once again, this time to the 4th Foot, with which he was deployed to South Africa for the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. He was discharged at Lancaster on 15 July 1891.
