Canada General Service 1866-70, 1 clasp, Fenian Raid 1870 (968 O.R. Sgt. R. Jackson. 69/ S. Lin: R.), slight edge bruising, very fine
Note, the Canada General Service Medal was issued a great period of time after the campaign and thus is Regimentally engraved. Thus the rank given is that which he held when he received the Medal not the rank he held when it was earned.
Robert Jackson was born at Saint Luke's, Chelsea, London in 1846, the son of Elizabeth Jackson of St. Luke's. Finding employment as a bricklayer early in his life he attested for the 69th Regiment just six months after his eighteenth birthday at Plymouth on 25 July 1864. Seeing Home Service until 18 August 1867 he was then posted to Canada, being promoted Corporal there on 30 July 1868 and appointed Orderly Room Clerk on 2 August the same year. It was in this rank that he took part in the Battle of Trout River during the Fenian Raid 1870- although oddly the roll has him as a Sergeant at the time.
Tried for drunkenness and reduced to Private, Jackson was posted to Bermuda with the Regiment in that rank. Despite his infraction he soon returned to Orderly Room Clerk and sent from Bermuda to join the Gibraltar Garrison on 21 April 1873. Finally returning to Home Service on 4 December 1878 it was here that Jackson was finally promoted Orderly Room Sergeant on 1 July 1881. He was still in this rank when he was discharged on 23 January 1888, applying for a place at the Royal Hospital Chelsea the next month on 14 February. Jackson's Medal was issued and returned in January 1888, re-issued it finally reached him in May that same year at 18 Esmond Road, Kilburn, London; sold together with copied research comprising a medal roll, medal claim sheet, Chelsea Pensioner Soldier's Service Record Transcription and a former dealers list dating to 1987.
