Indian Mutiny 1857-59, 1 clasp, Lucknow (T, Wrighton. 1st Batn 10th Regt), contact wear to edge and contact marks, nearly very fine
Thomas Wrighton was born at Tower Weston, Brackley, Buckinghamshire in 1821 and attested on 15 June 1842 with the 21st Regiment. Volunteering to transfer to the 10th Foot on 1 November 1847 with the service number 2470, he joined them in time to see action in the Second Anglo-Sikh War. Here he was present for the siege and capture of Mooltan as well as the Battle of Goojerat.
Remaining in India after the British victory he was still on the subcontinent when the Indian Mutiny broke out in 1847. Wrighton was part of General Franks' column during the March on Lucknow and his service record lists a number of skirmishes and minor battles throughout the advance. The most notable being the Battle at Chanda after which the Regiment managed to unite with Sir Colin Campbell's army and advance on Lucknow.
They continued to operate in rebellious territory until the end of the conflict. Wrighton continued to serve until 21 July 1863 when he was discharged in Ireland. He had served a total of sixteen years and seven months in the East Indies; sold together with copied medal rolls and a copied discharge paper.
