A 'Lucknow 1857' casualty's Punjab Medal to Private M. Cleary, 10th Foot, who survived the heavy fighting outside Mooltan only to die of wounds sustained during the Siege of Lucknow

Michael Cleary was in service with the 10th Foot by 1841, being stationed in the North of England. Posted to India prior to the Second Anglo-Sikh War, he saw heavy fighting with his Regiment at the Siege of Mooltan. Both repelling sorties from the garrison and facing house to house fighting through the city. They later joined General Gough's army for the Battle of Goojerat.
Cleary remained in India, being stationed at Wazirabad in 1851. On the outbreak of the Indian Mutiny the 10th joined General Franks' column fighting their way towards Lucknow. Joining with General Havlock's relief force they battled their way back into the city. Cleary was mortally wounded on 14 March 1858, he survived for some time but eventually succumbed, being listed as 'died of wounds 31 March 1858' upon the roll; sold together with copied research including a medal roll.
