(x) South Africa 1834-53 (Serjt P. Lyons. Cape C Riflemen.), contact marks, very fine

Patrick Lyons was born at St. Mary's, Limerick and attested with the 7th Dragoon Guards at Westminster on 18 November 1846. Posted almost immediately to South Africa for service in the Xhosa Wars he was not long with the unit but soon transferred to the Cape Mounted Riflemen on 8 March 1848. Appointed Corporal on 1 September 1849 he served in that rank for four years before being further advanced Sergeant on 1 November 1853. He was finally invalided as a result of dysentery on 31 June 1858, a period of service which would have seen him fight in the 7th and 8th Xhosa Wars. Lyons was officially discharged at Chatham on 21 September 1858; sold together with copied service papers.
