Samuel Knee was born at Devizes, Wiltshire in 1792 and enlisted on 10 July 1808 with the 1st Battalion, 69th Regiment of Foot. Joining his Regiment in the East Indies he was here during the campaigns waged against French and Dutch held islands in the east between 1810-1811 which culminated in the capture of Java.
They saw heavy fighting in the Battle of Cornelis in which the Battalion Commander, Lieutenant-Colonel McLeod was killed. Knee survived the fighting on Java however he did not escape the campaign unscathed. Found to be suffering from Ulcers he had his right leg amputated while returning from the campaign. He was discharged having served a total of two years and 148 days in the East Indies; sold together with a copied record of service and typed notes.
