Thomas Edward Smith was born at Staines, Middlesex on 2 September 1899, the son of Eli and Mary Smith of 21 George Street, Staines. Working as a Gardener prior to enlisting on 20 August 1915 as a Boy Class II and training aboard Impregnable I and posted to cruiser Drake with the rank of Boy Class I. While Smith was aboard Drake was one of the ships which took part in the search for the commerce raider Möwe.

Transferring to H.M.S. Concord after a spell ashore he was promoted Ordinary Seaman aboard this vessel on 2 September 1917 and Able Seaman on 4 June 1919. Continuing to serve after the war Smith was promoted Stoker class I on 2 September 1920 while serving with H.M.S. Bee. The L.S. & G.C. roll has him serving aboard H.M.S. Courageous on 31 January 1933, five years after she was converted into an aircraft carrier; sold together with census data, service records and L.S. & G.C. Roll as well as information on H.M.S. Courageous.
