A late-Victorian era 17th (Duke of Cambridge's Own) Lancers headdress or Czapka, black leather skull with white cloth ribbed sides and white leather top, gilt bullion decoration and pom-pom, latter with correct 'deaths-head' button, brass fittings and horse-hair plume, front plate with battle honours up to 'South Africa 1879', interior lining present, marked with size in white lettering, waxed cotton sweatband in relic condition, brass curb-chain lining dry and distressed, complete gilded bullion cap-lines, together with a pair of brass spurs and leather attachments, also a wooden plinth for display, this with ribands attached for the Crimean, Indian Mutiny, South Africa and Queen's South Africa medal ribands attached to two sides, 305mm x 130mm, exterior black leather and white top somewhat crazed and white cloth with minor traces of moth damage, about good fine (3)

It is possible this may be a composite piece, the body of the cap bearing indication of officers marks of distinction but the fittings and fixtures being correct for Other Ranks.
