John Edward Danaher was born at Waterford, Ireland on 18 June 1838, who joined the Royal Navy in March 1868. He served at various stations, including an extended period at Cromer in the Lifeboat, being shore pensioned in July 1888. He assisted in saving the lives of the crew of the barque Costa Rica of Sandeford, which was stranded off Amble in December 1876, at that time Commanding Boatman. With a '...tremendous sea running', he boarded the vessel and assisted in safely landing the crews. His Long Service Medal from the Cromer Station was presented on 8 July 1912 by F. H. Barclay; sold together with copied research.
