'I have been requested by the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Command, to present the Military Medal:
No.202724 Cadet Tootill: J., 4th Bn Seaforth Highlanders. On September 20th, 1917, at Poelcapelle, during an advance, Acting Company Sergt. Major J. Tootill & another man captured a pill-box garrisoned by a party of twenty men & a machine gun. Having gained his objective, A/C.S.M. Tootill discovered that the Company on their right had been held up by the enemy & not able to advance. All the Officers having become casualties, he organised & successfully carried out a flank attack, thus enabling the Company on his right to obtain their objective. For his initiative & gallant conduct during the whole of this advance he received the congratulations of the Divisional Commander. The riband of the Military Medal was presented by the Corps Commander. Signed by Lieutenant Colonel E.S.L.Shaw Commanding No.15 (Artists Rifles) Officer Cadet Bn.'
Joseph Tootill served in France from 1 May 1915 with the Seaforth Highlanders, and was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on 26 June 1918. His medals were sent to 68 Old Broad Street, E.C.2.
