Arthur Gillinham Pedder was born on 22 October 1888 at Greenwich. He joined the Royal Navy on 22 October 1906 and his Great War was full of recommendations:

'H.M.S. Sylph Harwich Destroyers 1917. Continuous and meritorious service since the outbreak of hostilities, including the following special services rendered in the 9th and 10th. Flotillas.

(i)
November 1914. Whilst serving in Linnet. Did exceptionally good work on the occasion of salving S.S. Ernaston for which he received their Lordships' appreciation.

(ii)
July 1917. Did exceptionally good work when the German prize SS Heinz Blumberg was partially flooded and aground off the Dutch Coast. It was chiefly due to him that it was possible to bring this vessel in.

(iii)
Many other meritorious war services, for which he has received no recognition. (Extract from this rating's service certificate: 12 November 1914. Specially recommended for distinguished service against German cruiser SMS Konigsberg (Rufiji River German East Africa). 22 June 1917 Commended for good service on occasion of salvage of SS Ernaston. 3 July 1917. Noted for war services, action with SMS Konigsberg. 28 November 1917. Recommended for Acting Mate. 28 November 1917. Good services on 16 June 1917 (capture of merchant vessels by Harwich Force). To be noted with a view to acceleration. Was in charge of the engine room and did very excellent work on this occasion, as he has done twice previously, working in a strange ship he had considerable difficulty at the beginning as there was very little water in the boiler. Engine Room Artificer Pedder was in charge of the engine room and found the boilers practically empty, no water showing in the glasses and the engine room in a state of disorder. He succeeded in making the necessary water and repairs and steamed the ship back to Harwich.'
