Leonard Wood was born in 1893 in Bradford, England, and was noted as a Clerk upon his attestation for service with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force on 24 September 1915. Promoted Lance-Corporal five days later, in 1916 he reverted to Private upon being appointed a batman; spending time 'On Command' in London, his service papers (available to view online via the New Zealand archives) additionally note service aboard the S.S. Marama, an ocean liner which served as a hospital ship during the Great War as His Majesty's New Zealand Hospital Ship No. 2. Marama Hall, at the University of Otago, is named after this vessel and specifically commemorates the medical personnel who served aboard her during this time.
Wood saw further military service during the Second World War, but only for seven months before he was discharged. Sold with 38 original black-and-white photographs relating to Wood's Second War service, most annotated in ink on the reverse with details of the image.
