Dorothea Layland-Barratt was born at Chelsea, London in 1886, the daughter of Sir Francis and Lady Frances Layland-Barratt. Her father was a Liberal Politician who worked as an M.P. in the Wartime Government and her mother was a noted member of St. John Ambulance. Particularly notable is her childhood governess, the suffragette Emily Wilding Davison who took the role upon completing her degree.

On the outbreak of war Layland-Barratt's mother opened her home in Torquay as a hospital for officers, with her serving as Commandant. Her daughter trained as a surgical nurse and served with this hospital; she appears on the roll for the British Committee, French Red Cross as a Nurse having been stationed at Chateau Rimberlieu. She died at Old Mill, Blewbury, near Didcot, Berkshire on 8 January 1964; sold together with handwritten notes as well as copied research comprising extracts from The Tatler, The Order of the British Empire and Who's Who as well as census data, photographs and medal rolls.
