Pair: Sapper W. Bassindale, 228th (Barnsley) Field Company, Royal Engineers, who was wounded in action on 9 October 1916

William Bassindale was born in 1876, the son of Joseph and Eliza Bassindale of 24 Albion Terrace, Grace Street, Sheffield. Working as a Skilled Iron Moulder prior to enlistment Bassindale attested on 26 July 1915 at Barnsley for the Royal Engineers. Posted to 228th (Barnsley) Field Company he entered the war in France on 2 May 1916.

228th Field Company was attached to the 41st Division and saw action with them during the Battle of the Somme, suffering several losses between September and October 1916. During this time Bassindale was also injured, suffering a Gunshot Wound to the leg on 9 October 1916 during the fighting between the Gird Lines and Bayonet Trench.

Sent to No. 26 General Hospital at Etaples he was returned to Britain on 11 October 1916. Re-joining the war in France with No. 5 Reinforcement Company on 1 June 1917 Bassindale was posted to a Depot Company on 18 September 1917. He continued to serve until 2 March 1919 when he was discharged to the reserve, Bassindale died at Barnsley in 1947; sold together with copied research comprising census data and war diary entries as well as a transcribed service record.
