Albert Richard Major was born in 1898 and lived at Whitcliffe Cleckheaton, Yorkshire prior to the Great War. Enlisting with the 2nd Battalion, Durham Light Infantry on 21 December 1916 he was soon transferred to the 19th (2nd County) Battalion, one of the 'Pals Battalions'. Major served with this unit until 24 February 1917 when he was transferred to the Royal Defence Corps.
