Wallace Bruce Godfrey was born at Surbiton and was a clerk at the British Electrical Federation upon his joining the Royal Army Medical Corps in December 1913. He served in France from 22 December 1914. He suffered a fracture of the right tibia whilst on active service in March 1917 and was treated at the Winchester Military Hospital. His injury caused 70% debility for six months.
