William Franklin was born at Walthamstow, Essex in 1888 and served with the 83rd Company of the Boys Brigade before enlisting with the Royal Artillery on 16 November 1908. Embodied for service on 5 August 1914 as a Corporal Franklin entered the war in France on 17 March 1915 with 1/6th London Brigade. He remained there until 23 November 1915 before returning to Britain, where he remained until demobilisation on 24 November 1919.
