Charles Oscar Bateman was born in 1890 at Chesterfield and by 1911 he was a Police Constable, probably with the Sheffield City Police. He joined the Royal Army Medical Corps at Sheffield on 2 September 1914 and served in Egypt from 31 March 1915 with the 29th Field Ambulance. In September 1915 he was removed from the Hospital Ship Assaye for reasons unknown, and in the following years he suffered from influenza. Bateman was discharged from the 1/3rd East Anglian Field Ambulance in 1919 and he died at Sheffield in March 1970.
