(x) Three: Private W. Wynne, 'B' Company, 9th Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers, who was gassed and later wounded in action at Givenchy on the opening day of the Battle of Loos on 25 September 1915

1914-15 Star (13076 Pte W. Wynne. R.W.Fus:); British War and Victory Medals (13076 Pte. W. Wynne. R.W.Fus.), minor contact wear, very fine (3)

William Wynne was born at Garth, Llangollen on 4 March 1890. Enlisting with the 4th Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers on 31 August 1914 he entered the war with the 9th Battalion on 19 July 1915. Wynne had been in the country less than three months, and had already been gassed, when the Battle of Loos began. Here the 9th Battalion was part of 2nd Division which launched a diversionary attack at Givenchy on 25 September. The idea was to draw German forces north of the La Bassee canal and away from the main focus of Allied efforts. During the fighting Wynne suffered a gunshot wound to the right thigh and was taken by No. 59 Field Ambulance to No. 2 General Hospital. Unfortunately it was clear that he would not fully recover and he was posted to the Class W Army Reserve on 29 November 1916. Rejoining briefly from the reserve on 13 April 1918 before being finally discharged on 19 February 1919; sold together with copied discharge papers.
