Christopher Hanby was born at Shotton, Durham in 1880, the son of Christopher and Sarah Hanby of Shotton Colliery. His father worked as an innkeeper but the younger Hanby soon joined the trade ubiquitous to the region and became a Quarryman. Joining the 6th Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment at Sunderland in December 1914 he was posted to Gallipoli. Entering the war on 28 September 1915 he did not serve on the Peninsula long when he was killed in action on 12 December 1915. Hanby is buried at Hill 10 Cemetery, Suvla Bay; sold together with handwritten research, copied M.I.C. and Commonwealth War Graves Certificate as well as an ostrich feather, by family repute sent by the recipient to his sister while on service.
