John Dickie was born on 14 June 1894 at Watt Street, Glasgow. Having been educated at the Albert Road Academy, he joined the 9th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry on 17 September 1914. Having served in France from 26 June 1915, he was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the 3/7th Battalion on 28 October 1915. Dickie was admitted to the Yorkhill War Hospital, Glasgow with laryngitis in June 1917; sold together with copied service record and a cap Badge.
